Dr Nader Riad took part in “The 6th International Conference on Production and Design Engineering for Development (PEDD6)” with a working paper entitled “Development of Manufacturing Systems in Egypt to Meet Export Requirements.” PEDD6 was hosted by the Department of Production and Design Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, Ain Shams University during the period of 12-14 February-2002. It was witnessed by a group of experts and academics.(Available in Arabic – German in PDF)
Riad’s working paper reviews some important pillars regarding manufacturing systems in Egypt and the dimensions of Egyptian industrial exports. The paper revealed that industrial activity is based on three overlapping rings (life cycle of the product, life cycle of the individual and life cycle of the institution), which are combined with harmony to generate power or intercept to generate weakness. The sequence of these cycles generates what is called “virtuous circles” and “vicious circles.” It also confirmed that target development is the success maker for institutions and that necessary development is needed to escape from failure of institutions. Furthermore, it stressed the importance of re-recognizing the engineering qualifications from Egyptian faculties in foreign universities, as this stopped 30 years ago. The paper referred to the role of standard specifications in development as the low-cost alternative for the initial phases of research and development. It also recommended enhancing the competitive abilities of Egyptian products.
