Since the reunification, the federal government of Germany has been working very hard to let the economy in former East Germany catch up with its western counterpart. And the efforts eventually paid off, as Germany is now one of the strongest economies in the world. In particular, the government there has been keen to make sure that wealth and resources are fairly distributed to all its states. Germany is also deemed as a model of democracy, with power being shared by different parties. At the international level, Germany has strong ties with Egypt (it is Cairo’s first trade partner) and has been keen to develop a special relation between the German and the Arab media. The visit of German Chancellor Gerard Schroeder to Egypt comes on the backdrop of these strong relations between these two countries.
