Fifty years have passed since the foundation of the Federation of Germany in 1949. Since then, Germany has made great strides, regaining its unity and becoming a global superpower. Its constitution is seen as one of the best worldwide, as it enshrines human rights and freedom. Germany has turned into a social democracy, and it welcomes more refugees and emigrants than any other European country. Its leaders are aware that a fair distribution of wealth is necessary to maintain Germany’s prosperity. This is closely connected to the need to guarantee freedom and democracy and to keep this country competitive at the international level, especially since it decided to become more actively involved in the international decision-making processes. Germany is a key player in the EU and is currently president of the G8. During the latest G8 Summit in Cologne, this country stressed the need to alleviate the suffering of poor nations. The German Parliament has recently been transferred from Bonn to Berlin, another important sign of Germany’s reunification.
