The appellation of Safiya Zaghlul as the “Mother of the Egyptians” is referred to an incident. Safiya Zaghlul was the wife of Saa’d Zaghlul Pasha and his companion of struggle against the English occupation forces who exiled him to Malta. Returning from his exile on board of a vessel, the port of Alexandria was closed because of the heaving of the waves. Thousands of people rushed with their small feluccas acclaiming the great leader. Affected by the feeling of the masses, Saa’d Zaghlul ordered his wife to lift up the yashmak from her face. This action has an underlying meaning showing to the masses that she is among her friends and her family. Since then, Safiya was called “the Mother of the Egyptians”.
