President Mubarak’s visit to different EU countries was very significant, especially from an economic point of view. The EU (and in particular Germany, France and Italy) is Egypt’s first trade partner, and the visit aimed at strengthening the already strong ties between Egypt and Europe by striking some agreements with some EU countries. Perhaps the most important of them consisted in swapping Egypt’s debts for the establishment of investment enterprises in Egypt, which will – among other benefits – create job opportunities for young Egyptians. Other agreements were also discussed which will boost European investment in Egypt and make it easier for Egyptian products to enter the EU market, thus extending to Egypt some of the privileges enjoyed by EU member states. Following this visit, further agreements between this African country and its European partners were struck to establish joint ventures in Egypt, thus giving Egyptian workers the chance to get used to European quality and production standards and making them suitable to work in these countries‘ companies.(Available in Arabic – German in PDF )
