The German Unity is now 25 years old. However, the scene at the Brandenburg Gate is unforgettable when media broadcasted thousands of Germans, from all over Germany, celebrating the fall of the Berlin Wall. That day, the world witnessed how powerful people could be steered by bravery and nostalgia for freedom and to what extent they can do what would seem impossible.(Available in Arabic- German in PDF)
After the passage of 25 years, we are invited to contemplate the past and search into the future, avoiding falling captive to indifference and monotony towords our reality. It is quite wonderful to discover that the German reunification treaty was, as well, a birth certificate for a pan-European unity and that both undoubtedly led to each other. What is more wonderful is that the European Union birth certificate signaled the Soviet Union’s demise; something which opened the gateway for expansion in European unity to include now 28 European countries from the east and west of Europe. The figure is going up without discrimination or bias to either of the two sides. This has its tangible dimension in the stability of world peace, deepening it and removing the impacts of WWII. We arrived at an equilibrium ,after 60 years of split between the east and west of Europe, often involving military interventions. Now the European mentality is driven by the language of economy and development – a top priority par excellence.
