Some Egyptian importers and manufacturers are calling for standard specifications of fire extinguishers to be mitigated in order to help the local industry be able to compete with its international competitors. Other Egyptian industrialists and experts, though, reject such a proposition. They believe a country can advance only by abiding by these specifications, otherwise its products would never be accepted abroad. One of them says that manufacturers can be defined as such only if they can meet these specifications. If they cannot, they should be helped fill this gap. Dr. Nader Riad is one of the industrial experts who reject this proposal. He says the Egyptian standard specifications, which have been amended over the past few decades, are no obstacle in the way of Egyptian industry. He thinks they are indeed necessary, especially when it comes to potentially hazardous products such as fire extinguishers. He describes the tests that this kind of product must pass before it can put out for sale, as many mortal incidents with fire extinguishers have happened in the past.
