A field study suggests than 70% of small industries in Egypt work with no license. This is due to the many complicated procedures and obstacles they have to face. They do not get very much official help, and their profits are falling while taxes are rising. Yet, they are a major source of employment. They are mainly located in major cities, but they are cropping up throughout the country as migration flows from villages to cities is decreasing. More attention has to be paid to them so that they can boost their production, says Nader Riad.
